One of the most asked questions from not only my clients but would-be home owners alike is the least expensive roof option which particularly stems from the common “misguided” concern on construction and cost implications.

For some time at least, my answer has stayed the same; the SKILLION roof, and only so for the simple reason that this choice is much cheaper than the other and rather usual pitched roof.

A Skillion roof is commonly referred to as such in Australia whereas the rest of the world might call it any one of these names; pent roof, shed roof, lean-to roof, and so on and so forth.

This roof, will however be technically called a mono-pitched roof on the universal stage, and is a single sloping roof surface that is not attached to another roof surface.

Since cost concerns are at the pinnacle of most construction undertakings, Cost is reduced especially that fewer roof members – purlins and trusses – are used here than on the alternative options. Down the road of construction, it is further reduced when a sloping ceiling (also known as a raked ceiling) has to be fitted in which has the advantage of maximizing the ceiling height.

In conclusion, its efficiency transcends with the ease of adding to an existing roof while keeping the same slope during an extension.
