We use interior design techniques to create ideal interior spaces. These techniques come in all forms; in this case tried and tested rules – the golden rules.
The 3 Golden Rules of decoration that come to mind here are:
This is also referred to as the 60-30-10 rule. To get a well balanced scheme, keep 70% of the elements (say, the walls and floors) as one colour, 20% in a second colour (say, prints and soft furnishings), and add 10% of a vibrant accent.
If you’re mixing patterns, use large with medium, or medium with small, never large with small. Choose prints and patterns with one colour in common, for a look that feels coordinated but not too matched’.
3. THE PAINTED BOX RULE
The way a paint colour looks changes according to the time of day, the light, the size and orientation of a room. Buy a tester pot and paint the inside of a large box with a couple of coats of your chosen colour; you’ll have a miniature ‘room’. See how the paint colour changes within a 3D space.
Always add a surprise: your focal point – whether it’s a feature wall, a huge mirror or a piece of wall art – is the short cut to a wow’ room.
Ultimately, that’s how you achieve an elegant and much more functional living space in your home, by you!
As always, thanks for reading.
